Boy! A dog watering bowl. How hard can it be to design a good one? Pretty hard, I guess, since I haven't found one yet that I'd give 5 stars.
I've been using this one for about two years. The good thing here is that it holds 3 gallons so I only have to refill it about twice a week for my two dogs.
The bad - gunk (algae, I think, or some other kind of scum) grows inside the tank and it's really hard to clean it out. Also, to refill you fill the tank with water, replace the lid, then in one clean swift movement you have to flip it over and insert it into the base before the water squirts out all over the place. Filled with water, the tank weighs over 20 lbs so this is not as easy as it sounds.
I think if they'd put an airtight lid on the TOP of the tank in addition to the regular screw lid on the bottom, both these problems would go away. You could remove the top lid to reach in and clean the other end, and you could refill the tank through the top.

Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain Review

Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain

I have two cats and I definteley spoil them rotten! When I first decided to get a water fontain for my cats I chose the Petmate Freshflow over the Drinkwell because the Drinkwell was more expensive and I was completely against the idea of listening to running water all day. Unlike most customers I've heard from the Petmate worked farily well as a water BOWL. It was easy to clean and my pump never stopped working as I've read many others did. However, the water running down the little ramp really didn't satisfy my cats. They did drink from it, but they would still jump at any chance to drink running water out of a faucet which is the whole reason I started thinking about getting them one in the first place. About a ear and a half later I started thinking about getting them a new one and possibly going with the more expensive Drinkwell this time. I saw the new Drinkwell Platinum and decided to go with it right away. The Platinum is more expensive than both the previous models I was looking at but it is definteley worth the extra cost. It's like Drinkwell took all the criticism and praise for both thier design and their competitors and created an exceptional pet drinking fontain. I have had my Platinum for about 5 months now and have been very pleased with it. The Drinkwell team designed the water outlet so that it would minimize the water from braiding which cuts down on the water noise. In fact at the setting I have mine, about mid way between low and mid level, I can't hear it at all! They also put a little debris trap before the water even gets to the pump which should greatly increase the pumps life. The water resevoir is also much bigger than that of my Petmate and the Drinkwell's optional larger resevoir on their original design. All and all I veiw this as a time where a company actually went out there and designed their product by what thier customers wanted!!! So after reading all that you maybe wondering why I only gave this product 4 stars. Well the one thing that I would really like to see is that the actual bowl area be made of stainless steel or some ceramic mix which is totally what I have been told by several vets is the BEST material for any pet to be drinking/eating out of. If they were to add that one extra feature than I would give this 5 stars out of 5 hands down!!!!!!

Pet Drinking Fountain - Raindrop Design Review

Pet Drinking Fountain - Raindrop Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this fountain for my cat, Willie, who is going to be 20 years old this month. He is unbelievably healthy for his age but does have CRF. Because he should drink as much water as he can and loves it from the faucet, I thought this would be the perfect solution. Well . . . it still could be. It's been operational for 10 days and I've seen him actually enjoy a refreshing drink from it twice. Since I'm not watching him every minute, a few kitty licks could go unnoticed.
It took some time for him to figure out that the object on the floor was for him, that it was a source of water, and that there is more than one way to capture his drink. He seems to prefer the water at the source where it bubbles up or as it runs down the little ramp toward the bowl.
The fountain runs very quietly. Willie does not hear well anymore but if he did, I don't think the pump noise would concern him. There is one suggestion I do have, however, when you're preparing this fountain for your kitty. After you've gotten all the parts washed and have filled the fountain with water, let it run a short while, then empty that batch of water. Refill with fresh water and run it a while longer. Now comes the funny part--get down on your hands and knees and sniff the fountain where the water bubbles out. When I did this, it was no longer a mystery why Willie was not immediately drawn to drink from his new fountain. There is a rubber grommet where the water flows out and it smells so strongly of rubber that's it awful! No one would want a drink from something that stinky, especially not a kitty with a sensitive nose. Keep running fresh water through the fountain until you're convinced that YOU would be willing to take a little drink from your kitty's new fountain. When there is no more smell, your kitty will eventually be tempted to investigate and hopefully taste the water that flows from his new gift.
Good Luck!
***********UPDATE*************
6/19/10
I have updated my rating of this fountain from 3 stars to 5. Willie is really enjoying his new source of water! He's tried drinking from the bubbling source, the ramp, and the still pool at the bottom. He likes having a choice. Just in case this didn't make the cut with him, I left his "old-fashioned" regular bowl of water setting next to the fountain and he walks right passed it in favor of his new gift.
Also, you should know the cleaning of this fountain couldn't be easier. After I've washed the human dishes on Saturday, I simply unplug, disassemble, and hand wash the entire fountain. I put it back together and we're good to go for another week. My plan is to disassemble the motor and clean it when I change the filter--which is going to be the middle of July. I think 45 days will be appropriate for both activities.
Well, once again, good luck if you purchase this pet fountain. I hope your experience is as favorable as ours. Two paws up from Willie, the 20-year-old cat.

Fresh and Clear Drinking Fountain for Cats and Puppies Review

Fresh and Clear Drinking Fountain for Cats and Puppies

I have 5 cats, and they all love this water bowl. I got this as the upstairs water bowl. It is very quiet. Two of my cats love to lick condensation off glasses and soda cans, and so they love to drink from the water on the dome. My other cats love the cool water in the bowl that is constantly kept cat-hair-free when it recirculates back into the dome through a mechanical filter. This filter also has a few token grains of carbon, but I can't say there's really enough to do anything significant.
It is not like a water faucet, so if your cats like drinking from the faucet, this might not be the right fountain for you.
It took a few days before any of my cats would drink from it, but now they all use it. It's a great way to make sure your cats are getting enough to drink.
I can easily recommend this water fountain for your cat. I expect this would work out very well with small dogs, too.

This unit works great for 2-3 months, but then it fails.
I have had very frustrating experience with this device for I bought 5 units so far since it came out on market.
Everytime, the unit stopped functioning(or water kept on coming out without anything present). Although it broke everytime, I kept on buying a new one because my dogs love this. But now, I give up. Really, this unit works fot the first 2-3 months, and that's it.

Lentek 6-Day Automatic Pet Dish Review

Lentek 6-Day Automatic Pet Dish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this automatic feeder for 2 years. It works great and has eliminated the screaming my cat used to do before meals. Now she just sits in front of the feeder and waits for it to go off. It holds 6 meals (but one is exposed so it really only has 5 meals). The cover rotates to expose a new meal every 6, 12, or 24 hours. My cat has been very abusive to the machine (because she can smell the food in it) however she has not been able to break the cover or get to any of the other food compartments. If you do force the machine to go backwards the motor will kick on and rotate the cover back to the correct position. My only real problem with the feeder is that the motor is quite loud and drains the battery very quickly. Also as a note, there is no way to set the hour on the feeder, it just goes off 6,12, or 24 hours after you turned it on. So if you want it to always go off at 7am you would need to turn the power on at 7am/pm the first time.

Cat Mate C20 Automatic Pet Feeder Review

Cat Mate C20 Automatic Pet Feeder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my first one at least 10 years ago -- and I actually still have it. I also bought 3 more because they were SO good -- now aside from the usual teeth marks on the edges of the doors and dishes, my cats have not yet broken in.
I had 3 cats at one time and each cat had to eat in their own room with the door closed -- no big deal because they had all the amenities in whatever room they had been placed. Now I have just two (RIP Princess -- 13 yrs old, taken by Cancer). La Large One will steal whatever food is not secured - so she and Cee Cee have their own separate rooms and their own Cat Mates.
With wet food, the ice packs are good for 14-16 hours maximum, depending on the weather -- even with A/C, in the summer the ice packs will melt faster, so I sometimes freeze the 14-16 hr food in its Cat Mate dish before I pop it into the Cat Mate assembly, even WITH the ice pack in the bottom of the assembly (only in the summer)-- the food WILL defrost before the door opens.
The plastic dishes are top-dishwasher safe (for me anyway). The rest of the unit can be wiped with a wet cloth to clean it.
The battery CAN fall out of its niche -- so I would suggest retaining/securing the battery (AA battery) with a bit of mailing tape (AFTER it has been placed inside the battery holder) to ensure that it stays where it belongs and the kitty won't miss a meal or two. Try not to get too much tape on the black box (right above the battery) that contains all the moving clockwork parts.
Turning the dial CLOCKWISE each time you set it will extend the life of the unit.
Sometimes (rare) the dials will pop out of gear -- I've been able to fix that by opening up the little black box (with the clock and gears) on the back of the unit but it is a tricky/delicate operation. I can take apart cars, so perhaps I have a little more experience in working with gizmos.
DON'T drop this unit and it will reward you with many good years. The hinges (where the top of the door swings up) may wear out before the unit does -- I'm a great fan of Mailing tape-- it makes a great emergency hinge, and seems to last a long time. The cats don't care -- as long as the dish door opens.
IF you are feeding outdoor stray/feral cats (and I hope they are all spayed and neutered), I would suggest leaving the feeders in a protected area and remember that raccoons and other critters will try (perhaps successfully) to break into it and possibly harm the kitties as well. Just a word of caution on my part.
IF your catsitter is being entrusted to feed your cats using the Cat Mate C20 feeders please post the instructions on the wall or fridge where s/he can see them -- both of my cat sitters had never used the Cat Mate C20 feeders before, so the instructions were extremely helpful to them (and my kitties!!)

The minus one star is because the instructions for assembling this fountain were out and out wrong! However once we got it together, it has been superb. No noise. No mess. Easy to clean. Since it has a cord, plugging it in can be a little tricky if you don't have a convenient outlet.

Our Pets Fresh Food Tower Review

Our Pets Fresh Food Tower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Feral Will, our little rescued and quite neurotic cat, has calmed down considerably since we began using the fresh food tower. He used to gorge when we put out food, then beg when the bowl was empty. Sometimes his begging was while one of us was attempting to go down stairs or walk across a room. Once we left for a long weekend leaving two huge bowls of food so he wouldn't freak out. Uhhh, not such a great idea, he ate every speck of food and I think he must have gained three pounds.
This little, simple tool lets Feral relax. Food is always there so he doesn't have to gorge. Nice. I haven't tripped over him in weeks. We did have to put some tape over the hole to make the hole smaller to slow down the food flow. But that works and Feral is content and my life is easier. Very good return on my investment.

Pioneer Pet 6022 Ceramic Drinking Fountain, Raindrop Design Review

Pioneer Pet 6022 Ceramic Drinking Fountain, Raindrop Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first time I've bought a fountain for my cat, and I've done quite a bit of research on them. Though there isnt much information about this fountain online compared to the drinkwell and petmate fountains, I went for this one after seeing what the insides of the other fountains looked like. I wanted to write this review in amazon so others can get a bit more information so they can make an informed choice.
The main advantages that this fountain has over others are:
1. It's CERAMIC. No scratches in the plastic leading to bacteria. No allergies to the plastic, which some cats get.
2. QUIET PUMP. The pump is absolutely silent. There are three settings on the pump and the first one gives no sounds whatsoever. I have it set on the second setting to get the sound of trickling water. The pump is still quet.
3. EASY TO CLEAN. This was the main reason I got this one. The Drinkwell and petmate fountains requires disassembly and cleaning with special brushes. This fountain is only THREE PARTS. The top part where the water flows down, the main bowl, and the pump. Since it's ceramic, I basically set it at the hottest water setting to scrub it down and sanitize. No special brushes, no bleeding knuckles.
4. NO LEAKS. Just because of the way this fountain is designed (top ceramic dish sits on top of the main bowl), there is no way it can possibly leak. Unless you crack the ceramic dishes, of course!
5. It's pretty.
The only thing I wonder about the other fountains is whether or not my cat would like the waterfall-type fountains. My cat seems to like to drink out of the part where the water comes out of the pump more than out of the bowl. Nevertheless, he gets fresh water and seems to enjoy it.
So far, I'm satisfied with the fountain, and my cat seems to like it, too. As for the pump, I'll have to see how long it lasts.
