Rival 4071-WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express Review

I bought one of these close to ten years ago and it's still going strong, though I've taken it on three cross-country trips, countless weekend getaways and even to Guatemala.
Why? First, I don't like using hotel/motel coffee units -- who knows how clean their innards are? This holds more liquid, is easy to clean, and I know where it's been!
Second, it's useful for more than just heating water. I once took my daughter to a nice Disneyland hotel for four days, and did all our cooking in this little pot because food was so pricey. I heated soup, ramen, veggies, all kinds of things... and we actually ate well (though simply) the whole time.
Other reviewers have noted that it doesn't have auto shut-off. That's a good point, and it's a bit of a pain, particularly when you're as forgetful as I am. But the water always boils loudly enough that I hear it. Could be a problem in everyday use if you are wandering from room to room; fine for a motel.
The flip side is being able to adjust the heat level, which I don't think you could do if the unit shut off automatically. I've found that VERY handy for things that need a gentle heat, and use that feature a lot.
Power cord is frustratingly short, but necessarily so for safety reasons.
Naturally, anything that holds 32 oz. of water is a little bulky, but when I put it in my suitcase I just jam socks and breakables into it, so it ends up taking less room than you'd think. You can snap the top off, which is also a help when packing it. It's fairly lightweight.
The reason I'm back at this page is that my daughter just went to college and took the pot with her. I need a replacement for my travels without her! I was amazed to find the same pot is still being sold after all these years. That's probably a good sign about its quality in an era when things get redesigned every year.
At this price, if it lasted a year or two of steady use, I think I'd still be happy.

Zojirushi CD-LCC50 Instant Hot Water Dispensers (5.0 L) - Black Review

Zojirushi CD-LCC50 Instant Hot Water Dispensers (5.0 L) - Black

I bought one of these for work. It lives in an office breakroom and gets plenty of use. In this environment, you want the biggest one you can get, or the easiest to refill. 5L is a win. Ease of refill on this unit is so-so if your spigot or whatever can't clear its tall height. It boils, gets to temp, and maintains temp just great. The lid removes for easier fill. Easy to tell how full/empty it is. I like the magnetic power coupling a lot. Has settings for 208, 195, and 175 deg F - enough flexibility, although the 175 is a touch hot for green tea. Weakness: the "timer" has only one setting: "off now, and then turn on (to stay) 7 hours from now." This timer is essentially a not-very-funny joke. There is no real time clock, no auto-on, no auto-off. Uses about 50W to keep water hot (the 4L CV-DSC40 is better insulated but more expensive). Has a handle for carrying (even hot & full) and has a built-in turntable underneath. Unit is completely satisfactory and good enough to make me want a better. Also won't go back to traditional kettle.

Tiger PDHB22U Hot Water Dispenser Kettle w/ 2.3 Quart Capacity Review

Tiger PDHB22U Hot Water Dispenser Kettle w/ 2.3 Quart Capacity

This is the exact same model my husband and I owned in Japan (except the buttons are in English). We love it! We are big tea drinkers, and it's great to have hot water ready all the time. I like the size of the 2.3 quart model...it makes plenty of water for the 2 of us, even if we are making instant noodles, and yet it doesn't take up too much room on the counter. It takes about 15-20 minutes to heat up cold water, but with the 6 hour delay function, this is no problem. It only takes a minute or two to reheat already warm water. This water heater is extremely easy to use, and has many great and well-laid out functions. It is very comparable to the Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Dispensing Pot...it has similar features and reliability, but a good bit less expensive. We love this product and highly recommend it!!!

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel

I am a recently disabled adult that cannot get enough of a good cup of tea. So seeing this I thought it would make a nice birthday present for me, and make life a little easier around the kitchen. It performs as it says it will.
It looks bulky but is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle. The whole unit spins on a lazy-susan device making it east to direct the steam vent away from kitchen surfaces.
You will need a water pitcher of some kind to fill this easily. I have a medium sized one sand simply filly the pitcher twice to fill this device once. The handle on top, removable lid, and notched corner makes emptying and cleaning a breeze.
The temperature features are splendid and accurate, there are three:
205 for noodles/ramen etc, herbal infusions, pu-er, Assam and some other black teas..
195 For Darjeeling or delicate blacks like Illam valley are at this temperature as well, let the water sit a few minutes in the brew pot befor adding tea leaves, if you have a very delicate tea.
175 for green or white teas. A few of the more delicate whites fill the tea pot first, then add the leaves. By filling your teapot dry first, this allows the water to lose 5-10F by just warming the pot. Often enough to make a better flavored tea.
On a given day I can go from pu-er tsocha right from boiling, and set the temp to 195. Make a pot of bold assam in the afternoon when at a full boil, then set the temp to 175. Now, after dinner it is set for making jasmine tea for dessert. All with a minimal energy usage and cost.
I have found it a good idea to refill it only 1-2 times then empty the remains, give it a brush inside with a towel, and then let it completely dry. My scale buildup was reduced quite a bit this way.
For a fully able person this unit -is- a bit of a luxury. A simple electric teapot with temperature control would do you just fine for a fraction of the initial cost. This will make cost up over time by the thermos nature though, just a fyi.
Have a chain tea drinker in your life though or thoughts for limited commercial use (like a small teahouse), or like tea but have a very full life and time schedule? This would make a great gift for you or even a small splurge to treat yourself.UPDATE:
Almost two years later and it not only looks fine but functions just as well as the day I got it. I have to descale it about every 9 months or so. Other than that it is pretty maintenance free. Talk about longer term bang for your buck. If you drink tea or would use boiling water on a daily basis, this is a staple for your kitchen.
Some other uses I found. When making soup, rice, thinning a sauce, or deglazing a pan fill your measuring device from the Zojirushi set in slow pour. I now use water from the boiler and the hot water not only speeds up the process, but some flavors are left alone because the room temp water would have cooled the dish and altered the flavors.
I have also found the steel finish wipes very easily. A friend who bought the white version has some staining that stubbornly persists to this day. All in all if you get one you will not be disappointed.
(small edits made above with input from trial and error over the period I've owned this boiler.)

Sunpentown SP-3015 3-Liter Hot-Water Dispensing Pot Review

Sunpentown SP-3015 3-Liter Hot-Water Dispensing Pot

You find hot pots like these in Asia, where hot green tea is drunk year-round. We decided to purchase one after a visit to friends in Thailand, and it's been a real favorite around the house.
The unit is lined with stainless steel and holds 3 liters or shy of a gallon of water. We use filtered water, of course. You plug it in on the side. The cord has a magnetic end that fits on the unit and then plugs into the wall socket. The magnetic plug is nice, as you can quickly remove the plug from the unit, rather than tug at a unit full of boiling water. You dispense water into your mug by pressing the top button and water comes out the spout under the top in front. I don't think this is something I'd let children use, as they could pull it down on themselves or spill scalding water on themselves if they don't dispense properly. So, adult supervision and keep it out of reach.
The water heats up in about five to seven minutes, boiling the water then holding it at sub-boiling temperature, perfect for tea or instant or filtered coffee or instant cocoa. If you run down the water, you can check the level on the front where there is a level indicator. After you add more water by lifting up the top, you can hit the Reboil button and heat up the additional water. The unit will not keep temperature correctly if you don't fill it above the minimum, so we tend to keep it at least half full at all times.

Other highlights include micro-computerized dry-boil protection, a safety lock feature to prevent accidental spills and burns, a stainless-steel gall, a water-volume indicator, and a removable top lid for easy cleaning.
